When I was a senior at Yale University, I wrote my thesis on the internal conflict that women athletes endured. I called it, “The Female Athlete: An Oxymoron.” The traits we needed to perform as top-level athletes, namely strength, power, aggressiveness & muscles, were at odds with the traits that society deemed feminine like a sweet nature, skinny body and accommodating personality. I struggled with this dichotomy for many years until I finally decided that it was time to redefine the female athlete and embrace both sides of the equation. I reached out to 20 women athletes to gain their perspectives on what it means to be a woman athlete today. Turns out we’ve come a long way baby!
