Program History

Kick Start empowers women with barriers to fitness - including health, income level, lack of motivation, life-style, family obligations - to complete a 5K race by providing her the opportunity to join a resource-rich community to prepare her for the race and beyond.

In summer 2010, Skirt Sports created Kick Start to reach women who otherwise wouldn't or couldn't complete a 5K. The concept was simple - offer a free entry into the Skirt Sports Skirt Chaser 5K in August, a Skirt Sports outfit, a training plan and support - but the impact was enormous.

To date, Skirt Sports has run two cycles, serving 60 women. The results speak for themselves:

  • 95% of Racers reported they would not have engaged in exercise without Kick Start
  • 100% said Kick Start changed the way they approached fitness
  • 45 out of 50 racers completed their race goal - 100% stayed with program
  • 100% will continue running, walking or another form of exercise
  • 100% of beginners report that having a Personal Motivator was the best part of Kick Start

"It was a great experience! I am very glad I made the choice to apply to the team and I think being part of Kick Start has helped me with more than just building a fitness program, it's helped me through life's ups and downs and unexpected events as well" - Kick Start Racer

"Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful" - Kick Start Racer

"Kick Start was the best thing I have done in running" - Kick Start Personal Motivator

"Please continue to offer this program. Women need opportunities to be involved with groups that empower them to make good decisions for their well being. It's too easy to default to taking care of everyone BUT yourself" - Kick Start Personal Motivator
