How do I know if I am experienced enough to be a Personal Motivator?

Anyone can be a runner. You don't have to be fast or to do a race every weekend to find joy and accomplishment in running. To be a Personal Motivator you should enjoy running, run regularly, and want to share your experience with others. You should be comfortable with your own ability to follow a training plan and complete a race. You should have the time to commit to working with your Beginner to set a goal, select a plan, and follow it. While you do not need to do every workout with your partner, you should have at least a couple hours a week to dedicate to encouraging her through in-person meetings, by phone or email. Training plans are 8 weeks long so you should make sure you select a time of year when you can commit to that length of time.

I want to be a Personal Motivator but don't have a Beginner in mind, how do I find one?

Kick it Forward is designed to give you the tools to inspire and guide a woman you already know to become a runner. Think about women in your life who are looking for a way to get fit and have expressed an interest in running. She may be a friend, colleague or family member. She may have dabbled in running before or can be completely new. Since Kick it Forward requires that you find your own match, you should share Kick it Forward with her as a unique opportunity for her to get running and for you to help her. Both of you must commit to participating in order to apply.

How do I help my Beginner set her goal?

Once your Beginner has agreed that Kick it Forward is something she would like to pursue, you should have a conversation with her to determine what she would like to achieve from her participation - Does she want to do a race? Does she want to get fit? Does she want to prove to herself she can be a runner? Or all of the above! As we know, getting started can be the hardest part so working with your Beginner to set a goal is a crucial part of being a Personal Motivator. Kick it Forward offers a 5k training plan for walking or running and encourages each Pair to pick a local race as a goal, however, it is fine to simply complete that distance on a designated day, 8 weeks from when she starts training, to get the benefits of Kick it Forward. To apply, you and your Beginner should know what her initial goal is but during the 8-week period it may change or become more specific as you both become more familiar with all Kick it Forward has to offer including a Motivation Kit for Personal Motivators.

How do I find a race in my area?

Most communities have numerous 5ks during the year. Depending on where you live, some seasons may have more options than others. Local running stores and groups are a good resource to tap into smaller, more community-oriented fun runs and less expensive events while Active.com and Running in the USA are great resources to find more established races in your area. It is a good idea to sign up for updates so you can know about a race well in advance in order to have ample training time.

How do I help my Beginner select her training plan?

Once a Beginner has set her goal, your Pair has submitted an application with the Personal Motivator taking the lead, and a Pair has been accepted to the program, Kick it Forward provides three training plan options - 5k run, 5k run/walk, 5k walk - for your Beginner to choose from. Each allows for her to customize her schedule around days of the week she prefers to work out. A Personal Motivator should work with her Beginner to help establish which plan is most appropriate for her Beginner based on her goal as well as her schedule. I am a beginner, how do I find a Personal Motivator?

Kick it Forward requires that all participants are part of a Pair either as a Beginner or a Personal Motivator. If you are a Beginner in need of a Personal Motivator, you should identify a woman in your life - a friend, colleague or family member - who is a runner that you admire. Approach her to see if she would be willing to partner with you to act as your guide to participate in Kick it Forward. Share with her the program benefits and requirements. Essentially, her commitment would be to hold you accountable to the goal you set and the plan you choose while both of you will have access to participant-only Kick it Forward resources. You will probably end up inspiring her too!!

What resources does Kick it Forward offer and how do I use them?

Once a Pair has found each other, set a general goal, has applied, and has been accepted, both the Beginner and Personal Motivator will join the Kick it Forward community. Detailed, customizable training plans; a Motivation Kit; weekly tips; are all accessible to a participant-only section of the Kick it Forward website. Pairs will also have access to a participant-only forum where the Kick it Forward community comes together to share information, celebrate successes, and encourage each other.
